Shimla — The Inter-College Badminton Championship at Himachal Pradesh University commenced today at Rajiv Gandhi Government College (Kotshera), located in Chaura Maidan, Shimla. This three-day event, taking place from October 15 to 17, features teams from 44 colleges across the state, celebrating youth and athleticism.

The event was officially inaugurated by Harish Janartha, the MLA representing Shimla Urban Constituency. He highlighted the significant role of sports in fostering confidence, discipline, and community spirit among young people. Janartha encouraged students to adopt sports as a way of life and avoid substance abuse, reiterating the government's dedication to improving sports facilities and opportunities.
Campus Developments
Dr. Gopal Chauhan, the College Principal, welcomed the guests and shared updates on campus improvements, such as the installation of floodlights on the basketball court, a new badminton court, ongoing construction of a retaining wall, and plans for a cricket pitch. He expressed gratitude to the Himachal Pradesh Government and the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for their ongoing support.
Infrastructure Announcements
During the inauguration, MLA Janartha addressed infrastructure issues, announcing plans to find a new location for hostel construction after the Geological Survey of India identified the previous site as unsafe. He assured students that public transport concerns would be addressed.

The ceremony was graced by several notable attendees, including Councillors Urmila Kashyap and Ankush Verma, Sports Supervisor Dr. Rajkumar, PTA President Kamal Lohia, Vice President Rajesh Thakur, and member Navneet Kaur. Sports officials from Himachal Pradesh University, including Sunny Papta, Munit Lakhanpal, Rajesh Sharma, Sumit Dhaulta, Hemant Negi, and Udit, were also present.

Organizing Secretary Dr. Vinod Kumar reported exciting matches in the parallel Inter-College Volleyball Championship. Notable results included:
- Government College Seema triumphed over Government College Kupvi with a score of 3-0.
- Regional Centre Dharamshala defeated UIIT, HPU 3-1.
- BBN Chakmoh College won against Government College Sangrah 3-0.
- Government College Bilaspur outperformed Sanskrit College Solan 3-1.
- Government College Palampur narrowly beat Government College Saraswati Nagar 3-2.

On the first day, upcoming matches include Barsar facing Sujanpur and DAV Banikhet competing against Government College Ghumarwin.

The inauguration also saw the presence of Dr. P.D. Kaushal, Dean of Student Welfare, and Dr. Rakesh Sharma, Coordinator of the Research and Development Cell. Students from NCC, NSS, and Ranger-Rover units played a crucial role in organizing the event, which attracted enthusiastic participation from faculty, staff, and students from across the state.
